2012 Sail Alaska

Sail Alaska 2012 departure news

Summer Solstice will kick off Sail Alaska this year. We will be leaving from Bedwell Harbor on Sunday morning, June 24th after the Jeanneau Rendezvous. There will be a skippers’ meeting and slide show of the 2011 trip Saturday morning, the 23rd. Coffee and doughnuts on the dock for the Sunday morning departure.

For those of you who like to sleep in, the tides this year will generally work in our favor in the afternoon and evenings, giving us time in the mornings for fishing and a leisurely breakfast of fresh crab omelets. We should have plenty of light to get into dock or anchorage for the night. Seymour Narrows ebbs north at 6.9 knots at 2:00pm on June 26th, so we will miss the big “tide ride” this year. We will go through on the first part of the ebb and push as far north as the current allows. We should leave Campbell River about 11:00 am. This current will only be an issue for the first three days, till we get to Queen Charlotte Sound; then we slow down and get into the cruising mode.

I have put together what I think will be a great route. The first half of the trip will be similar to last year (weather permitting); Misty Fjords, Anan Creek, Wrangle, Petersburg, and Frederick Sound. The second half will be Rocky Pass to Dry Pass, down the west side of Prince William Island and back to Ketchikan. This will be some new territory to me. For local knowledge, we will have Dave Dow along, veteran of many trips to this area. Dave brought Ruby Slippers home this way last summer.

For guests coming in for a visit, we will be near a jet port every 10 to 12 days. I will put together a map with an approximate itinerary for those stops. Let me know when and where guests might be arriving and I will adjust as necessary. I will be sending out an entry form out later this week. If you have any questions, give me a call anytime.
