2011 Sail Alaska

27 years after my first trip to the 49th state, Alaska keeps calling. Deliveries and summer vacations make up a dozen or so trips to Southeast Alaska. Each trip yields something new, something missed, and many reasons to return.

In 2011, I thought it would be fun to share the experience with some of our friends. Sail Alaska was born. Nine boats headed north; all types of boats that we had a great deal of experience with. After being dealers for these builders for many years, we have a great deal of trust in their performance and safety. American Tugs, Nauticat motorsailers, and Jeanneau sailboats made up the flotilla.

On RUBY SLIPPERS, a Jeanneau 49, I carried satellite phone gear, an SSB radio, an extensive medical kit, tools, and spare parts. We had extra kayaks, fishing gear and the grill for the beach BBQ. Luckily, we needed very few of the tools or spare parts and never opened the first aid kit. My daughters, Molly and Jessie, went with me to help with the boat duties. The group headed north after the 10th annual Jeanneau sailboat rendezvous in Bedwell Harbor, Canada, just across the border from the San Juan Islands in the U.S.

Sadly, all 38 boats that attended the rendezvous could not make the 8- to 12- week trip north. Jobs, boat payments, weddings, relatives visiting, life, and eating regularly were just a few of the reasons I heard. We just need to get our priorities straightened out… We will have to keep going north till everyone gets Alaska checked off their bucket list. Sometimes people just need a little push to set them on a great adventure.
